Travel to Nottingham

Nottingham is situated right in the middle of England. Thus, it is accessible from a variety of different airports and train stations. Below are our recommendations for travelling to and from Nottingham. They are listed in order by distance from Nottingham (shortest to longest) approximately.

East Midlands Airport: this airport is only 18 km away from Nottingham, and it has direct flights to/from many European cities. It is recommended if you can find a good flight option that works for you. It is well connected to Nottingham by frequent 24-hour bus service (skylink). Alternatively, you can use a taxi; Uber from East Midlands Airport to Nottingham is in the order of £20–30.

Birmingham Airport: Birmingham airport is not very far away and offers a good selection of international flights. Passengers can take the train from the airport (Birmingham International Train Station) to Birmingham New Street which is Birmingham’s central train station (10–15 minutes). From there, there is a train to Nottingham. The entire trip takes about 1.5 hours. A word of caution: Birmingham airport is a bit chaotic. It may take some extra time to find your way from the arrival gates to the train station. Don’t be afraid to ask for guidance along the way.

Manchester Airport: Manchester Airport is also a good option. It’s about 2.5 hours to Nottingham via train.

St. Pancras International Train Station: Eurostar operates direct high-speed trains from several European cities including Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris to London. What makes this option particularly convenient is that trains from London to Nottingham depart from the same station.

The London Airports

London Luton Airport: London Luton airport is also fairly close. It offers the advantage of not requiring an underground train through London city. In other words, you can reach this airport without going through London. However, it does not offer as many flight options as the other London airports. It’s a 1.5-2 hour train journey to Nottingham. Check the last train time to Nottingham if flying in the evening.

London Stansted Airport: Although Stansted is not very far away, the train connections between Nottingham and Stansted are awkward. You usually have to connect in London city via Tottenham Hale and then London St. Pancras/London King’s Cross. Plan a 3–3.5 hour train journey for this one. Alternatively, use a direct National Express coach service.

London Heathrow Airport: Heathrow is generally a popular choice because is has so many flights and connections. To get to Nottingham, you will have to travel to London first. There are many options, of which we recommend to use London Underground. The Picadilly Line provides direct services from Heathrow terminals to King's Cross & St Pancras International station, from where you can take a direct train to Nottingham.

London Gatwick Airport: London Gatwick is also a fairly popular choice due to its large number of flights. Also, it’s not a bad choice for a London airport. That is because there is a direct train called the Themeslink that connects directly to London St. Pancras and London Kings Cross (about 30 minutes). It’s also possible to take the standard London Underground/Tube to London St. Pancras, however, it takes longer and requires at least one change. We recommend taking the Themeslink train. From London St. Pancras or London Kings Cross, it’s about a 2 hour train journey to Nottingham.

Of course other airports are possible, however, we have not tried the other ones from Nottingham.

Transport within the UK

Trains: Nottingham is well-connected by railway. You can check the National Rail website for train times and tickets. Word of caution: if travelling from London, be sure to check the last train departure time from London St. Pancras or London King's Cross. The last train times may be as early as 10:30 pm.

Coaches (buses): You can check the National Express website for bus schedules. FlixBus also operates in the UK as well as Megabus. The coaches are much cheaper than the trains and often provide direct service from the airports to Nottingham, including night services, but generally take 1–2 hours longer. The main coach station in Nottingham is called Broadmarsh Coach Station. Some National Express services also make a stop near the University of Nottingham campuses.

Transport within Nottingham

Walking: many locations in Nottingham are close enough to be accessible by foot. For example, both the train and the coach stations are in Nottingham city centre. Thus you may walk to your accommodation if it’s in the city center.

Buses: Nottingham has excellent bus services. Google Maps and Citymapper are convenient apps to find the most suitable route; they also often provide live information showing if a bus is late. There are multiple ways to pay for a bus; the most convenient method is by using a contactless payment (contactless debit/credit card, or smartphone).

Taxis: Apps such as Uber and Bolt are convenient and reasonably priced. A taxi ride from the Nottingham centre to the venue will cost around £5–10. If you prefer a taxi company, DG Cars is a common choice; you can find their default prices for airport transfers here.
